Adult films have been doing that for decades.

In Hollywood, Alan Smithee has been used in bigger budget productions that went awry!

You'll peroidically find An "Alan Smithee" film, music by, or directed by... Alan Smithee. Probably happens at least once a year.

Same goes for McG, as far as I can tell.

there is that saying "Jack of all trades, master of none"

more and more this is becoming the case, especially for independent filmmakers!

One Hollywod example though you would be (everyone's favourite) Robert Rodriguez!

He's being doing all sorts of job roles for his films... Director, Editor, Writer, Producer, Cinematographer, Composer, Special Visual Effects, Production Designer, Actor, Second Unit Director... the list just goes on and on and on!!!

Does he excel in any of those skills? nope... does he make great/enjoyable films? yes!

I feel that if someone has a certain talent, and ONLY interested in that talent... then they should master it! Hence thats why Alfred Hitchcock is always refered to as the "Master of Suspense"

even though he has been a Producer, Writer Editor and Title Designer through his film career!

But Rodriguez has done something that most independent filmmakers wouldn't consider doing, he's been loyal. He has his Hollywood distributor and he doesn't play his distributor against other distributors when it comes time to make a new film.

The biggest trap a "do it all" filmmaker can make is to think their shiit doesn't stink and that they call all the shots when it comes to distribution negotiations.

    Wink

I think Rodriguez is perfectly happy at what he does best... making movies... learning new skills all the time... his fans can tell that he loves doing that!

I doubt he's too bothered about the politics of Hollywood... he lets his distributors take care of that... and seeing as thats Miramax - he's got the biggest players behind him!
